A lot of people ask me, “What would you do if…?” and I’m not always sure how I should answer them. Obviously, they are looking for a lesson in a self defense technique, but that isn’t necessarily what they need. You see, the question they should be asking is, “What should I do?” Self defense is so unique to each individual; yes, there are techniques that are learned, regardless of size, gender, or age, but the truth is that something that might work for me, might not work for you.
I was teaching a class on defenses from the ground, and in the class, I covered general defenses that work for most people. I had a student, however, that was having a difficult time executing the technique on her much larger partner. I then had to modify the technique for her, to make sure that she had an answer for her problem. Everyone’s Krav Maga can be different, and that’s the beauty of it; it’s a core set of principles that, when followed, allow you to modify techniques to achieve the desired result – escape and safety. This is why it is unbelievably important to have a teacher that understands these concepts and is ready and willing to work with you, to make sure that you will get home safely! I hope that you found this helpful, and I certainly hope you decide to take up Krav Maga, if you haven’t already. Instructor Phil
